Richard Stallman at U of M Tonight (Tuesday, Oct 21)

Happened to run across this last night:

mndaily.com: Comp. sci. activist to talk computing freedom at U

Which led me to dig up this press release with details. Willey Hall on the West Bank of the University of Minnesota at 6:30pm.

I’m not sure if I’ll make it. I’d love to hear Richard speak in person, even if it’s “just” his standard speech. It’s a lot more convenient for me to drive down to the U than fly to Boston.

I never got around to writing more about my trip to the FSF Associate Members meeting earlier in the year. Speaking of seeing the Great Man in person, the member meeting started with no RMS in sight. He wasn’t scheduled to appear until a panel later in the day, but I expected to see him sitting in the audience along with the other free software luminaries present.

At one point, an audience member asked a question and used the term “Linux,” at which time a familiar …

FSF Meeting in Boston (Part One)

Much after the fact, here are a few notes about my trip to Boston last month for the Free Software Foundation’s 2008 annual associate member meeting. This is part one. Maybe I’ll get part two up before another 6 weeks go by.

I like to travel, but I guess mainly with my wife. I didn’t like leaving her and our little baby girl behind. I took some pictures which I’ll be posting here in the days/weeks/months ahead.

Stopped in at the FSF offices at 51 Franklin Street. One of my ears was plugged from the flight, making me feel like a deep sea diver in one of those old metal helmets. It was hard to hear others or myself. I felt awkwardly conspicuous. More conspicuous than I …

Heading to Boston for an FSF Meeting

Well, Cambridge, actually. The Free Software Foundation is holding its Annual Associate Member Meeting at MIT on Saturday, March 15. (You can become a member and go also!) ;-)

I started mulling over the idea of attending last month. It occurred to me I might be able to get a deal on a flight with my paltry 31K NWA miles, and that it would be good to get out and do something different. Being on a weekend, I wouldn’t need to take much time off from work. So, with permission from my patient, gracious, and lovely wife, it all came together.

I’m really looking forward to meeting some free software folks. Are you planning on going? :-) Also keeping my ear out for an informal meetup on Friday night, hopefully near MIT since I’ll be staying in the area and without a car.

Weather permitting, I’ll be walking around Boston on Friday and trying to get a bunch of touristy photos …
