I've rarely compiled programs myself and have avoided it in the past, but with the few that I've tried (like this one), it's turned out to be less painful than expected. Usually if there are errors, you can get a good clue to what supporting package you need, and they are usually easy to install via apt-get. It might be worth your time to dig around a little bit.
