It's not that Google Notes being non-free is a huge problem for me, although it might be true that notes are a core "computing" function that I'd rather "own" the software for. I prefer a local application for privacy and better functionality. I really like the simplicity of Tomboy. It's designed very well for how I like to take notes. Maybe I'll end up using it and work on a Java version with the features I want to use. (Thanks for the pointer to Plasma. It's hard to tell from that page what the application is supposed to be.)
