Thanks for the HOWTO. Worked for me on Ubuntu Desktop 9.04 with IP6 entries in /etc/hosts commented out. (It's a VM under ESX3i (3.5))

Hi, Antonio -- I think the standard remote desktop connection works more like this, although I've only experimented with it briefly. (See comments 56, 57.) System / Preferences / Remote Desktop.

Hi,
I am new into this world.

I just tried the steps on Ubuntu 8.10 and it worked. The only difference is that the sudo vi /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf is now located under sudo vi /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

I also had the problem with the gray window with the X but once I rebooted all the steps worked just fine.

I have a mini host PC that is running linux. I connected it behind my TV.

My intention is actually to do the remote desktop using VNC from my laptop that is running Windows. My problem is that with your steps I was able to log in, but then it is a new session from the same user. What I want is actually to log into the same session same window, and be able to move the mouse on the TV and open windows on the TV from my laptop. But as soon as I connect to the linux host it is a new session even if I am using the same user.... I hope you can help me out.

It appears, as Croot has seen, there is a bug in VNC again. I'm now getting the grey rootweave with the big black X mouse cursor on my previously working box (:1 only). Looks like it's downgrade time again until we figure out the bug. I'd love for someone to confirm, though.

Hello Scott,
hello all,

Intrepid 8.10, vnc4server 4.1.1, configs are set according to the instructions above, but I can see only nice gray X window with the well-known big black cross on it..
Saw this issue several time in the feedbacks, but no solutions were posted. Any ideas?

I can connect to the system if only gnome session is started. I can start a gnome session (GS) remotely and then vnc works. But how to get the VNC working without starting a GS?

Any ideas? Would appreciate that. :)

With many thanks and
regards

Hi Scott,

I tried what you mentioned, but it did not work. Now even worst, I do not see desktop background, but get a terminal window by default. Any way I am not in such a hurry to resolve this, as I am just learning Ubuntu. By any chance if you (or any one who) know(s) the solution can shoot me an email hari emani at yahoo dot com.

I really appreciate your help in this regard.

Scott, I was also excited to be 100th commenter on this blog. I am glad that this is still running, and you're there to support us.

have lots of fun, love and laughter every day in every way,
